The Hidden Giant of the Maya World
Ichkabal is one of the most significant and ancient cities of the Mayan civilization. Located just 40 kilometers from the Bacalar Lagoon, its history dates back over 2,400 years.
- Ancient Origins: Settled around 400 BCE, Ichkabal is much older than Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. During its peak (200–600 CE), it served as a massive political and religious hub for the Kaan’ul Dynasty (the “Serpent Dynasty”).
- Massive Scale: The site features monumental structures that rival the world’s most famous ruins. Its tallest pyramid, known as Structure 4, stands at 42 meters (138 feet) high—nearly twice the size of El Castillo in Chichén Itzá.
- Lost in the Jungle: Although officially discovered in 1995, it remained hidden under dense vegetation and closed to the public for decades to ensure its preservation
